A new life after loss

After overcoming seemingly impossible challenges, Shelbey Taylor 鈥23 is ready to enjoy the life she has built through hard work, perseverance and faith. Upon completing her bachelor of science in nursing with honors, she has secured a position as a labor and delivery nurse at Catawba Valley Medical Center. In June 2023 she will marry her longtime partner and move into the home they have purchased together.
鈥淚鈥檝e worked all through college. I worked two jobs up until the summer before my senior year because my parents have both passed away, so it鈥檚 been on me to put myself through college,鈥 Taylor shared. 鈥淚t hasn鈥檛 been easy, and sometimes I鈥檝e flown by the seat of my pants, but I just put my faith in God because he has always helped me work it out.鈥
The demands of work haven鈥檛 kept Taylor from excelling in her academics. She came to Lenoir-Rhyne as part of the Nursing Scholars Program, which granted her admission to the College of Nursing directly out of high school, contingent on completing the core degree requirements.
鈥淚t was a big reason I came to Lenoir-Rhyne, knowing I wouldn鈥檛 have to compete for a spot as long as I kept my grades up,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檝e loved the nursing faculty and the small class sizes. To have that contact with your professors and classmates is so important, especially in a field like nursing, which is all about relationships and communication.鈥
Her academic performance also brought her induction into Sigma Theta Tau, the international honor society for nurses, and an opportunity to complete honors research looking at breastfeeding efficiency.

鈥淚 worked with two of my closest friends who really pushed me to join the project. I don鈥檛 know where I would be without them,鈥 Taylor shared.
Taylor鈥檚 network of friends has helped her not only with the emotional support to keep going after her mother鈥檚 death in 2018 and her father鈥檚 in 2020, but also with practical support, such as housing. She
met her fianc茅 in 2019, which brought a new kind of support into her life.
鈥淗e鈥檚 a fireman, and his station is actually across the street from the hospital where I work in Lincolnton,鈥 Taylor shared. 鈥淲e go to church together and look out for each other. I鈥檓 excited to get married and I鈥檓 really looking forward to having my own home after bouncing around for a while.鈥

While her new job at Catawba Valley Medical Center will be further away from her future husband鈥檚 workplace, Taylor is eager to start the job she secured in December 2022.
鈥淭hey called me with the offer while I was Christmas shopping, and I said 鈥業 have to call you back because I鈥檓 in a checkout line.鈥 You can鈥檛 have this big moment in the checkout at Marshall鈥檚,鈥 Taylor laughed.
Taylor gives credit to the School of Nursing and the Career Development Center for smoothing the job search process with plenty of interview and resume preparation along with recruitment opportunities. She completed her labor and delivery clinical rotation in the department where she will now start her career.
鈥淲hen I saw my first delivery, I cried. It鈥檚 like a miracle helping bring life into the world. I鈥檓 really passionate about motherhood, so to help women when they鈥檙e in this very vulnerable position, but they鈥檙e also so strong, I鈥檓 excited about that.鈥

They鈥檝e led research teams, earned national honors and represented LR鈥檚 science programs with distinction. But Christina Fisher and Demmi Ramos also built something less visible and just as lasting鈥攁 friendship rooted in trust, support and shared challenges.
